Brief Introduction to the Development of Buttons Down-the-Hole Drilling Bits

DTH Hammer Bits
The down-the-hole (DTH) drilling bit, which is splined to the hammer, break the rock by withstanding the alternating impact loads and rotational torque from the hammer piston during drilling. The down-the-hole drill bit must withstand high impact loads, torque, and friction during rock drilling, requiring the drill body and alloy teeth to possess high impact toughness and good wear resistance.

Early down-the-hole drill bit designs employed carbide teeth with chisel-shaped cutting edges. Two chisel-shaped alloy teeth were arranged in a cross pattern on the head, with an exhaust hole located in the center of the drill bit. This design resulted in low efficiency when drilling in hard formations, and the alloy teeth wore rapidly. In the 1960s, Hughes Corporation introduced roller cone bit technology to its ball-tooth down-the-hole drill bits, ushering in a new era for down-the-hole drill bits. With the widespread use of medium- and high-pressure down-the-hole hammers, drill bits are required to withstand greater impact energy, achieve higher penetration speeds, and exhibit greater wear resistance. Button-tooth down-the-hole drill bits have seen rapid development due to their adaptability, high efficiency, rapid drilling speeds, and reduced auxiliary labor. Advances in alloy sintering technology have recently led to the development of alloy teeth with ultra-coarse grains and nano-grains. These new alloy teeth meet toughness requirements while maintaining the alloy's wear resistance, significantly expanding the application range of alloy teeth in down-the-hole drill bits.
