PDC Bits Reprocessing Helps Achieve Performance Breakthroughs

  In fields such as oil drilling and geological exploration, PDC drill bits are widely used for their high wear resistance and efficient drilling capabilities. However, in actual operation, PDC drill bits often fail prematurely due to insufficient impact resistance and thermal wear of the compacts. This can manifest as compact cracking, delamination, or cutting edge failure. This is particularly true when operating in heterogeneous formations such as hard interlayers and gravel layers, where frequent impact loads significantly increase the risk of failure. This dilemma not only reduces drill bit life but also increases the frequency of bit replacements during drilling, resulting in high operating costs.

  To overcome this bottleneck, our company recently implemented a systematic reprocessing of the PDC composite sheets, thereby effectively improving the material's toughness and stability. Following treatment, they were tested using a traditional drop-weight impact tester. After multiple rounds of testing, no surface damage was observed. Subsequently, the composite sheets were subjected to extreme performance testing using a heavy-weight drop- weight method . The results showed that the average impact toughness of the reprocessed composite sheets increased by over 70 %. After multiple impacts, the composite sheets showed no deformation or chipping , and the interfacial bonding strength was enhanced, with no noticeable delamination or cracking.

 

  This technological achievement is of great significance for practical applications: the improvement of the impact resistance of PDC drill bits can directly extend the life of the drill bit, reduce non-productive time, adapt to the needs of operations in more complex formations, and at the same time reduce the unit footage cost, providing more reliable tool solutions for deep wells, ultra-deep wells and difficult-to-drill formations.
