Drilling Rods Introduction and Applications

Rock drilling tools, including drill bits, drill rods, and shank adapters, are used for blast-holes drilling in rock formations. The drill rod serves as the connecting link between the shank and the bit, transmitting impact energy and rotational torque from the rock drill.
Heavy-duty drill rods are categorized by application into drifting rods, medium- to deep-hole mining rods, surface mining rods, and roof bolting rods.
For jumbo drilling applications, the R32 thread series is the most widely used drifting rod type, employed in tunnel drifting and underground excavation projects to drill blast holes with diameters ranging from 43 to 51 mm. Rod lengths are available from 3,700 mm to 6,400 mm.
The rock tools for Hydraulic jumbo are classified by the thread model on the bit-end connection. Given that blast-hole diameters typically range between 41mm and 51 mm, the diameter at the bit-end connection must be kept below 32 mm.
With the continuous advancement in hydraulic rock drill performance—particularly higher impact power and increased output torque—the reduced cross-section at the thread root on the bit-end connection to match with the top hammer bits has become the weakest point of the rod body. To enhance material strength, the industry has introduced the α250, α280, and α330 thread series, along with the SR32, SR35, and SR38 series, as well as the TC35 and TC42 series.
